Choosing Attic Insulation
1. Pick your R-value
In California, Title 24 sets R-30 as the prescriptive attic value for new homes in the mild coastal zone and R-38 in hotter inland zones such as the San Fernando Valley and inland basin (with ducts in the attic). In Las Vegas's extreme heat, R-38 is a practical minimum. Shop R-30 or R-38.
2. Pick your material
- Fiberglass batts: affordable, DIY-friendly, best in open, regular framing.
- Blown-in: fastest over large attics and around obstructions; ideal for topping up.
- Rockwool stone wool: non-combustible; best for wildfire-prone hillside homes.
3. Remove or add on top?
Old insulation that is dry and clean can stay, with new unfaced batts or blown-in added over it. Insulation that is compacted, wet, moldy or contaminated by rodents should be removed first. See our attic insulation removal and replacement service.
4. Don't skip ventilation and air sealing
Seal attic bypasses before insulating and keep soffit vents open with baffles. Pair insulation with radiant barrier and attic ventilation for the biggest drop in summer heat.

- What is the best attic insulation for Southern California?
- For most homes, fiberglass batts or blown-in fiberglass to R-30 (coastal) or R-38 (inland) give the best value. In wildfire-prone areas, Rockwool stone wool adds non-combustible protection.
- Should old attic insulation be removed?
- Remove it if it is wet, moldy, compacted or contaminated by rodents. Clean, dry insulation can stay with new insulation added on top.
