How Soundproofing Insulation Works
Most interior walls are hollow, and an empty cavity carries sound like a drum. Dense stone wool absorbs sound energy inside the cavity, cutting the voices, TV and plumbing noise that come through.
For the Best Results
- Fill the whole cavity, top to bottom.
- Seal gaps, outlet boxes and the bottom of the drywall with acoustic sealant.
- For bigger improvements, add a second drywall layer or resilient channel.
- Don't forget ceilings and floors between stories.

- Does insulation really soundproof a wall?
- It significantly reduces airborne noise such as voices and TV. For impact noise, add decoupling such as resilient channel or a second drywall layer.
- Can soundproofing insulation be added without removing drywall?
- Batt products need an open cavity, so one side of the wall must be opened. It's easiest during a remodel.
