Single-Sided Radiant Barrier: Attic Heat Control on a Budget
Single-sided foil has one reflective aluminum face and one backing face. Installed correctly, with the foil facing the open attic air space, it blocks most of the radiant heat coming off a hot roof deck, at a lower cost per roll than double-sided foil. It’s a popular DIY upgrade for attics in hot inland areas of Southern California.

Which Way Does the Foil Face?
When stapled under the rafters, face the reflective side down, toward the attic, with an air gap between the barrier and the roof deck. A radiant barrier must face an air space to work.
Installation Tips
- Start at the top and work down, overlapping each course.
- Leave soffit, gable and ridge vents uncovered.
- Wear gloves; foil edges are sharp.
