6-Mil Vapor Barrier: The Starting Point for a Dry Crawl Space
Bare soil under a raised-foundation home releases moisture all year. That moisture rises into the joists, subfloor and any floor insulation, feeding musty odors, mold and wood rot. A polyethylene ground cover is the simplest fix, and 6-mil is the thinnest thickness generally used for crawl space ground covers.

When 6-Mil Is Enough, and When It Isn’t
- Good for: vented crawl spaces that are rarely entered, as a ground cover under floor insulation.
- Upgrade to 12-mil reinforced if plumbers or pest-control technicians crawl through regularly.
- Upgrade to 20-mil for full encapsulation.
Installation Tips
- Rake the soil smooth and remove debris and sharp stones.
- Overlap seams at least 6 to 12 inches and tape them.
- Run the liner a few inches up the foundation walls and piers.
